Bud Fritz Passes
Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame member William ‘Bud’ Fritz of Walkerton passed away this week.
Among his many career highlights, Bud Fritz trained and drove Apaches Fame to victory in the $1 million North America Cup at Greenwood Raceway.
In 1949, Fritz began his driving career at Elmira Raceway and through the years he captured the driving titles at Hanover Raceway along with Orangeville, Western Fair, Elmira and Owen Sound.
As a driver Fritz won almost 2,000 races with purse winnings of more than $10 million.
He also had tremendous success as a trainer/driver
In 1990 Fritz trained and drove 3-year-old pacing colt Apaches Fame to victory in the $1 million North America Cup at Toronto’s Greenwood Raceway.
Fritz also trained and drove A Worthy Lad, a horse that posted 30 consecutive wins
During his career Bud Fritz won the O’Brien Award as Canada’s Horseman of the Year in 1986, 1989 & 1990
In 1990, Fritz also received an O’Brien Award as Canada’s Trainer of the Year.
He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2001 and recently Hanover Raceway named its Rising Star Award after Bud Fritz whose colours remain a familiar sight at the track
Bud Fritz was 86 years of age.

Honour for Solinger
Junior forward Hana Solinger was named RIT Female Athlete of the Week
Solinger had key assists in both RIT goals that helped the Tigers to their first CHA point against visiting Penn State Saturday.
The junior forward made a centering pass from the left post that resulted in tying the game at 1-1 in the first period.
Solinger unleashed a shot from the right point that was redirected on its way to the net to knot the game at 2-2 and forced overtime.
Solinger is in her third year at RIT playing NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey.

CurlOn has announced the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts at Thornhill which was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols will now be held in April.
The Thornhill Club will host the Ontario Women’s Curling Championship April 7-10.
The Canadian Scotties are set to begin next week at Thunder Bay.
The Hollie Duncan rink from Woodstock which includes Owen Sound’s Julie Tippin, will be in the field of rinks competing
