Another victim of Stage 2 of the Provincial Re-Opening Plan, or the return to Stage 2, is curling
Of note, the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts at Thornhill last week was wiped out which created a unique process of determining who will represent Ontario at the Scotties in Thunder Bay…and I hate to add this, but, IF there is a Canadian Women’s Curling Championship.
Similarly, the Ontario Men’s Curling Open Qualifier was scheduled to be conducted at Welland Curling Club over the weekend.
Based on Stage 2 legislation, that competition was postponed and pushed ahead to the January 28th weekend.
Locally, organizers of the Port Elgin Chrysler 22 Ontario Tankard powered by Bruce Power are keeping a keen eye on the qualifier.
The Welland event was/will determine the final entries for the Tankard at the Plex in Port Elgin which is scheduled to commence on February 9th.
Speaking with Doug Flowers of the Port Elgin committee last week, his message to everyone is to ” hang loose “, that is, be ready and be flexible.
The stated expectation is for a return-to-normal in Ontario sports & life, come January 27th.
Everyone connected to the Tankard hopes that’s the case, but as we’ve seen in various aspects of the pandemic era, alterations and modifications are the norm.
And on a final local curling note, it goes without saying that the Brokerlink Insurance Grey Bruce Major Curling League is in limbo, awaiting word as to when and how they’ll proceed with their second draw.
The league hopes to resume their season whenever area curling clubs are permitted to open again.
