No one was injured in a fire at a multi-storey building in Ayton early Wednesday morning.
West Grey Fire Chief Phil Schwartz says the alarm about the blaze at 411 Mary Street came in around 1:30 a.m. and firefighters arrived on scene to a fully engulfed building. Flames were burning through the top storey and attic, while the wind blew embers several blocks away.
All three West Grey fire stations were involved in the response — Ayton, Durham and Neustadt. Schwartz says the Minto, Wellington North, Elmwood and Hanover fire departments also attended to assist with tankers hauling water.
Schwartz says the structure appears to have been built in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It was destroyed by the fire.
There were five apartment units in the building. Everyone got out safely.
According to Schwartz, firefighters had the blaze knocked down around 7:30 a.m. this morning. Crews remained on scene until around 10 a.m.
Schwartz says there was some damage to a neighbouring building as well, but firefighters managed to save it.
The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
