The semifinal games at the World Junior Hockey Tournament were scheduled for today in Edmonton.
Of course, the entire tournament was wiped away after 4 days of competition due to COVID-19.
There were a number of positive tests on various teams, which based on the protocols in place led to 3 games being forfeited.
Out of concern for the health & welfare of everyone involved, especially the players, while also citing the competitive integrity of the tournament being compromised, the International Ice Hockey Federation halted the proceedings.
It’s unfortunate on a number of levels, including those who make the World Juniors a holiday tradition.
Truthfully, I’ve drifted away from the tournament, certainly from the early going.
I did watch a bit of Canada’s comeback against Czechia in the opener but had no interest in the watching more than a minute of the blowout victory for Canada over Austria.
Nobody likes to watch a predictable sporting result and that too often is the case at this tournament, which usually means I get keen around the semifinals when generally the 4 best teams are left to compete fully for the championship.
But there are no semifinals today and no Gold medal game tomorrow which is both unfortunate for the event and a sign of the times
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
