Saugeen Shores Police have arrested and charged a 35-year-old woman after she allegedly struck a pedestrian and then fled from officers multiple times.
Town Police say they were called to the Sanctuary Park Cemetery in Port Elgin around 9:10 a.m. Tuesday morning because of an erratic driver.
According to police, officers arrived on scene and learned a female had struck a pedestrian with her vehicle causing minor injuries, and then fled the cemetery.
Saugeen Shores Police located the suspect vehicle nearby, but when an officer activiated the police car’s lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the female driver ignored it and took off.
Police say due to the dangerous driving of the female suspect a pursuit was not initiated. The suspect vehicle was seen speeding on side streets and not stopping at traffic signs.
Soon after, police say the vehicle and driver were observed at other locations in Port Elgin and the female continued to fail to stop for police. Saugeen Shores Police say in one instance, the female driver even accelerated towards a police car and the officer had to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision.
Police eventually located the vehicle stopped in the parking lot of an apartment complex. However, when an officer attempted the place the female driver under arrest, she took off again in her vehicle.
Saugeen Shores Police say soon after the vehicle fled the parking lot, another officer located it abandoned on the street. The female suspect was located at a nearby residence by police and placed under arrest.
Town Police say a 35-year-old woman has been charged with several offences including assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police (x3) and escape lawful custody.
She was released from custody with a court date.
