There was a unique announcement last week, one that connected a local venue with a sporting event that had to a certain extent faded in time.
The Canadian Snowcross Racing Association and Sauble Speedway both confirmed that the season opening event will be staged at Sauble Speedway January 9th-11th.
Of course for decades, Victoria Park in Owen Sound was the site for the annual Georgian Cup oval races that in time morphed into a snowcross event.
Mild winters had an impact on the Victoria Park event and later when the Rec Centre was constructed, the annual Georgian Cup became a warm memory of cold winter days past.
Now, Sauble Speedway makes perfect sense for the CSRA.
They have a 1/3 mile track, a spacious infield, an ample pit area, a grandstand capable of holding several thousand people, a powerful p.a. system plus the ability to light the facility should the races extend towards darkness.
Furthermore, Sauble Speedway is along the well used snowmobile trail that connects Bruce County with Grey and the belief is that natural avenue will attract almost as many fans on sleds as those who arrive in cars & trucks.
Finally, an early January date should equal a heavy base of snow for the racers and the timing post Christmas-pre-Ground Hog Festival gives South Bruce Peninsula another significant event date on the calendar
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
