Do it for the children.
That’s the latest message from our medical officer of health to anyone who remains hesitant about getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Charles Gardner said yesterday that children under 12 are proving to be particularly vulnerable to the virus and made up 31 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases reported in Simcoe-Muskoka last week.
He said kids made up more than 30% of new cases in the region last week and he has a message for anyone who is still hesitant about getting the shot.
Gardner says the vast majority of cases recently have involved the unvaccinated, including young children and he doesn’t expect a vaccine for them to be available until later this year or in early 2022.
Dr. Gardner says he also plans to issue instructions later this week that would require facilities hosting youth sporting events to require proof of vaccination from coaches, officials and volunteers.
Pfizer announced last month that a trial involving a lower dose of its vaccine, proved to be safe for children aged five to 11.
