The Ontario Hockey League season begins this week.
The Owen Sound Attack will open their season with a home-and-home series against the London Knights; Friday at the Budweiser Gardens and then Saturday night back at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.
Attack fans should brace themselves to see a lot of London, Kitchener and Guelph. In fact 32, or almost half of the 68 game schedule will be against those 3 entries.
What Owen Sound won’t see much of is the Eastern Conference, outside of the annual 6 game set with geographically close Barrie.
Otherwise, Owen Sound won’t see an Eastern club which using an historical view might be a shame, but then again it might be a blessing.
On one hand, Owen Sound has a terrific record against the East over the last 10 years going 106 & 53.
The Attack have a winning record against 8 of the 10 Eastern clubs over the last decade, plus they’ve split 20 games with Ottawa over that time period
Only Oshawa has a winning mark against Owen Sound at 13 & 7, but even there, 5 of the Owen Sound losses were in shootout or overtime.
The blessing in avoiding the East this year, might be missing a rare year in which high draft picks, star players and significant acquisitions have landed, most notably at Kingston and North Bay.
But for this season what transpires in the OHL Eastern Conference is of little consequence to the Owen Sound Attack who need to fully concentrate on their Western Conference rivals.
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
