Owen Sound is applying for provincial grant dollars to help finance planned upgrades to the J.D. McArthur Arena at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Director of community services Pam Coulter told councillors at Monday’s meeting the replacement of several refrigeration plant components at the arena are included in the city’s five-year capital budget for the facility, but Owen Sound could advance the work to 2022 if the grant application is successful.
“Replacing these aging core assets identified in our five-year capital plan will increase the overall efficiency of the plant and vastly improve the quality of the ice,” Coulter says.
Council approved a recommendation to apply for an Ontario Trillium Foundation Community Building Fund (capital stream) grant.
According to a city staff report, the estimated cost of the refrigeration plant work at the rink is just over $496,000. More than $397,000 would be covered by the grant if approved.
