The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) and the Town of Collingwood will begin maintenance activities along the Pretty River Dyke this fall.
Since the town was built on a shallow flood plain, the urban areas are prone to flooding, which is why the Pretty River Dyke was built in the 1970s.
Currently, dense groundcover, trees and shrubs are slowing down the flow of flood waters and reducing the capacity of the channel, which could lead to flood waters spilling over, causing property damage and threatening public safety.
As a result, some trees and shrubs along the slope of the dyke have to be removed, but groundcover such as grasses and wildflowers will remain, along with the trail.
NVCA will be hosting an online Q&A session from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to answer any questions or concerns residents have regarding the Pretty River Dyke or maintenance activities.
