On August 23rd, I said in this space that I doubted the Toronto Blue Jays would make the post season as a Wild Card entry.
At that time Toronto was a half dozen games back of a post season berth with too many teams in between them and the promised land.
As if to verify my assessment, the Blue Jays would lose that night at New York to the Mets, part of a weekend in which they lost 2 out of 3 and looked pretty much finished.
Since then, Toronto has been rolling and going into a weekend series at Baltimore against the lowly Orioles, opportunity is knocking as Toronto has won 8 in a row and are unbeaten in September.
I’ve said many times I liked baseball better with 4 divisions, and thus 4 playoff teams, but with the Wild Card format MLB has managed to create excitement where otherwise none might exist.
Looking at the 6 divisions, there’s really only 2 races for the titles, that being the National League West where the Giants lead the Dodgers and the weak National League East where only the eventual winner will make the post season.
Elsewhere, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, the White Sox and Houston appear to be home and cooled out.
Big weekend for the Blue Jays at Baltimore- I hope you have a great weekend.
