The SIU has cleared a Collingwood OPP officer of any wrong-doing in connection with a man’s shooting death.
It says OPP officers were called about a man in distress at a home on Third Street on September 9th of last year, when the man barricaded himself inside a residence.
Shortly after they arrived, the SIU says the man exited the residence with a shotgun, so police repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, and deployed a taser with no success.
The man then pointed the shotgun in one officer’s direction, who discharged his firearm at the man, who was struck by 8 out of 11 rounds and later pronounced dead in hospital.
SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that the officer acted to defend a threat of imminent death to himself and others, so there was no basis for proceeding with criminal charges and the file has been closed.
