Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “,….. proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.

Back in May at the PGA Wells Fargo Championship, Bryson DeChambeau, like Supertramp, took the long way home…..and back.
DeChambeau was 2 over par after the opening 2 rounds and believed he missed the cut, so he hopped a plane and headed back his home in Dallas.
When he got to Texas, he found out he made the 36 hole cut and promptly used his Netjets deal to fly back to North Carolina
In rounds 3 & 4, DeChambeau had back to back 68s, and ended up 9th at the event and pulled in almost 1/4 of a million dollars, which covered his flight tab.
All of which reminded me of the 1984 Molson’s AM-FM World Series of Fastball at Barrie.
Radio station CKMP from Midland played their first two games, winning one and tying the other, so it appeared impossible that they would gain a spot in the Championship Game.
So, since the tournament was being hosted by Molson’s on Molson’s property with plenty of Molson’s products, let’s just CKMP took advantage of the hospitality.
Sometime around 5 pm, a tournament organizer approached the boisterous CKMP picnic table, and said, ‘ they’re waiting for you on the Main Diamond ‘.
It turned out a series of stunning upsets opened the door for the tiny Midland station to earn a berth in the title game.
First there was silence, then the CKMP ballplayers scampered to the Championship Final where they put up a valiant battle.
Like Bryson DeChambeau, CKMP didn’t win the tournament, losing the final by 1 run to CKEY, but they had a great moment and a lasting memory that’s approaching 40 years of age.
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
