Some changes are coming at West Grey’s landfills.
West Grey council received a landfill operations update at its meeting on Tuesday outlining changes due to take effect on Sept. 1 at sites in Bentinck, Durham and Normanby. All three landfills will have their hours of operation altered, new recycling programs introduced and the minimum charge for accessing the sites increased to $10.
The existing minimum fee is $5.
A report by West Grey’s Director of Infrastructure and Public Works Vance Czerwinski explains film plastic recycling bins will be set up at the Bentinck and Durham landfills. A one-year pilot program will also commence that will see Second Wind Recycling provide the municipality with expanded styrofoam recycling service — compacting and removing all post-consumer packaging delivered to the recycling depot.
As for the changes in hours: the Bentinck landfill will be open one hour less on Wednesday and so to will the Durham site on Thursday and Friday. Both will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those days.
The Durham and Normanby landfills will no longer be open on Saturday. Normanby will now operate on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Czerwinski’s report says the proposed operational changes will result in estimated annual savings of $8,000, with increased tipping fee revenues more than offsetting the costs of the new recycling programs.
