At the Olympic Games last week, American gymnast Simone Biles took the unique step of walking away from defending her all around title
Biles withdrew from the competition to focus on her mental well-being.
The decision comes a day after Biles removed herself from the team final following one rotation because she felt she wasn’t mentally ready.
She outlined the basis for her decision…….
It’s a pretty rare move for a defending champion, but the factors are not unheard of.
When we preparing for a Bodog ” This Date in Sports History ” we came across Mary Lou Retton’s Gold Medal performance at the 1984 Olympics.
When we looked for a clip of her victory, what we found was an interesting comment from many years later……..
Pressure.
To the fan, it’s what makes the Olympics and sports in general so great.
To the competitors, especially in this day and age, sometimes it’s an entirely different story.
