Mary Simon says she’ll promote climate action and indigenous-driven conservation principles as Canada’s new Governor-General.
Simon was installed to the position during a special ceremony today.
Canada’s 30th Governor-General says human security must include environmental security.
“The twin global crisis of nature destruction and climate change are undoubtedly the challenge of our time,” she said. “For evidence, we need only look at the arctic and what has happened this (past) month across the country – the devastating impacts of forest fires, prolonged droughts, and record heat waves.”
Simon says in order to have a healthy future we must reset our thinking to understand that nature contains and creates our climate.
She says she will promote climate action that’s making a real difference and also inspire other Canadians to do the same.
She hopes to promote this both nationally and around the world.
