A York Regional Police officer has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash involving a motorcyle and a sport utility vehicle along Highway 6/10 in Meaford last week.
Grey Bruce OPP, Grey County EMS and Inter Township firefighters were called to a collision between a motorcycle and an SUV on Highway 6/10 around 11:30 a.m. on July 23.
Provincial Police say the 55-year-old driver of the motorcycle was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The passenger on the motorcycle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween said on social media “it is with great sadness that we share the off-duty passing of Staff Sergeant Craig Heatley.”
MacSween confirmed Heatley succumbed to his injuries after being involved in a motorcycle collision in Meaford. Heatley’s wife was the passenger on the motorcycle and MacSween said she is in stable, but serious condition in hospital.
The driver of the SUV involved in the collision was taken to hospital for assessment.
MacSween described Heatley as a well-respected 31-year police veteran who worked in criminal investigations, academics, auto recovery and uniform patrol.
“This is a devastating and unexpected loss for all of Craig’s family, friends and platoon mates,” MacSween wrote. “Craig was both a valued (York Regional Police) member and dear friend with whom I’ve worked and played hockey. He will be remembered for his jovial personality, sense of humour and passion for policing.”
Grey Bruce OPP say the investigation into the fatal crash is continuing.
Highway 6/10 was closed for several hours last Friday between Holland-Sydenham Line and Sunny Valley Road as a result of the incident.
