Guindon & Brown To Hockey Canada U18
Hockey Canada has invited Owen Sound Attack forward Cedrick Guindon and Head Athletic Therapist Andy Brown to the Men’s Under-18 Development camp.
Guindon was one of 45 players invited to camp, while Brown will serve as one of the Athletic Therapists
The Under-18 camp will be conducted in Alberta from July 26th to August 3rd.
Attack Release
Hockey Canada announced today that Owen Sound Attack forward Cedrick Guindon and Head Athletic Therapist Andy Brown are both headed to the Men’s Under-18 Development camp. Guindon was one of 45 players invited to camp, while Brown will serve as one of three Athletic Therapists on site for the event.
The Under-18 summer development camp, taking place at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in Tsuut’ina Nation, Alberta from July 26th to August 3rd is part of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. This event is comprised of a mixture of on-ice practices and games as well as off-ice activities, normally designed to help choose a team for the Hlinka Gretzsky Cup and identify players for the IIHF Ice Hockey Under-18 World Championships in the spring. Unfortunately, this year Canada will not be participating in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, set to kick off on August 2nd in the Czech Republic. The camp will also feature combined practices and intrasquad games with Canada’s National Junior Team on August 2nd and 3rd.
Neither Guindon or Brown are strangers to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, with both having donned the red and white previously. Guindon won a bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Games and was invited to last year’s Under-17 virtual Development camp, while Brown is a three-time gold medallist with the under-18 program, winning the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2009 and 2017 and the Hlinka Gretzsky Cup in 2018. He has also represented Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2006 and 2017 and the IIHF Ice Hockey Under-18 World Championships in 2019.
“It’s really hard to put into words” said Brown when asked about being invited to be involved in the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence again. “Being a part of Hockey Canada and this program is a great honour and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity.”
“It’s a great honour to be able to participate in another great Hockey Canada program” said Guindon when asked about his invite. “I’m looking forward to working with some of the best coaches and competing against the best players from across the country.”
The Hockey Canada Men’s Under-18 Development Camp takes place in Tsuut’ina Nation, Alberta from July 26th to August 3rd.
OHL Release
Hockey Canada has recognized 13 Ontario Hockey League players as part of a group of 45 players invited to attend Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team Development Camp at Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on the Tsuut’ina Nation near Calgary from July 25th to Aug 4th. Sarnia Sting head coach Alan Letang, Ottawa 67’s goaltending coach Charles McTavish and Kingston Frontenacs equipment manager Chris Cook have also been recognized, along with Owen Sound Attack therapist Andy Brown, North Bay Battalion therapist Andrew Sachkiw and Guelph Storm mental performance consultant Dr. Ashwin Patel.
One OHL goaltender, four defencemen and eight forwards were recognized as invitees to the 11-day camp. Players will be split into two teams, Red and White, and participate in practices and intrasquad games, including combined practices and intrasquad games with Canada’s National Junior Team on Aug. 2nd and 3rd.
“This stage of our Summer Showcase is about bringing together the top under-18 players in Canada to work and learn from an elite-level coaching staff, giving them the necessary skills for their hockey development to grow and succeed,” said Alan Millar, director of player personnel for Hockey Canada. “We have an opportunity to connect with the players through on- and off-ice sessions to give them the tools that will only enhance their skill set as they advance through our program and prepare for the upcoming season.”
Letang, who was appointed head coach of the Sting late last month after serving behind the Attack bench, will return to Canada’s coaching staff. Letang won a gold medal as an assistant coach with Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship and, as a player, helped Canada’s National Men’s Team to a 1998 Spengler Cup championship and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Deutschland Cup.
The camp is typically a stepping stone in evaluating and selecting Canada’s roster for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, but Canada will not participate this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The focus will now turn to the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship next spring, where Canada will look to defend their gold medal after claiming the top prize at this year’s tournament in Texas.
