The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has issued a statement assuring residents that although it has confirmed the zoning for a proposed fish farm, it has not made any other approvals.
A release says, “The Georgian Bay Innovation Group has not requested or received any approvals from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, for any portion of the proposed aquaculture project.”
Mayor Janice Jackson says the statement was made to reassure residents who are expressing concern the project is a done deal.
The Georgian Bay Innovation Group recently purchased land at 83 Berford Lake Road where they are proposing the construction and operation of a land-based aquaculture facility.
A citizen action group website called smellsfishy.org is concerned there would be water contamination and other environmental impacts as well as noise, increased commercial traffic and possible effects on surrounding property values.
The Town says, “The project is at a very preliminary stage.”
The Town statement also says it is “Aware that the Georgian Bay Innovation Group is currently consulting with the Provincial Government and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON), regarding the proposed aquaculture facility.”
