Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced $38.7 million for the implementation of a Cowessess First Nation Child and Family Services system.
The move supports the 1st ever coordination agreement to be signed between the Federal Government, Cowesses First Nation, and Government of Saskatchewan respecting First Nations, Inuit, Metis children youth, and families.
“We are working with other First Nations to reach similar agreements,” said Trudeau. “My commitment is this – that we will continue to work as a partner with all communities on what they need to keep their children safe and thriving.”
Trudeau says the fact that the agreement has been signed means children will get the support and protection they need in their own communities.
The move comes mere weeks after the first tragic discoveries of unmarked graves at former residential schools in Canada.
“Never again, should kids be taken from their homes families and communities,” vowed Trudeau.
