Police say two suspects have been arrested, after they were allegedly caught in the act stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle in Orillia.
A resident witnessed the two suspects trying to steal the part from a Honda CRV at Home on West Street South early yesterday morning and called police.
The OPP says the witness had intervened and the suspects fled dangerously in a vehicle, which was located a short time later in the downtown area, where two 50 year old men were taken into custody.
Police say as a result, Wayne Dewhurst, age 50, of Carden Township, has been charged with:
- Theft under $5000
- Mischief under $5000
The accused was released on a Form 10 Undertaking and is set to appear on August 31, 2021, at the Ontario Court of Justice, Orillia.
In addition, Matthew Baesten, age 50, of Orillia, has been charged with:
- Theft under $5000
- Mischief under $5000
- Dangerous Operation
The accused was held for a bail hearing on June 27, 2021, via video link, at the Ontario Court of Justice, New Market.
Theft of catalytic converters has been on the rise in Ontario over the past several months. The units contain precious metals which can be sold for top dollar to metal recycling companies. The Orillia OPP would like to remind vehicle owners to take steps to protect your property by parking in a garage if possible, otherwise, parking in a well-lit area with video surveillance if available. You can also park adjacent to curbs or fences in order to limit access to the underside of your vehicle.
