South Bruce Peninsula has called off its Canada Day fireworks displays in Wiarton and Sauble Beach.
A statement signed by the town’s Mayor Janice Jackson says this is being done in light of the horrific discoveries at the former Marieval Residential School in Saskatchewan and the recent similar tragedy found at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
“With the residential school tragedies in our thoughts, hearts and minds, it has become clear that this is not a time for celebration, but rather a time to show solidarity with our Indigenous neighbours of the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, as well as First Nations communities from across Canada, as we mourn and grieve these unfolding tragedies together,” Jackson says in the statement.
The fireworks scheduled for Wiarton on July 1 and Sauble Beach on July 3 have both been cancelled, according to Jackson’s statement.
