The Town of Bracebridge has lowered flags at the municipal office to half-mast in memory of what is believed to be 751 people whose remains were discovered on the grounds of the Marieval Indian Residential School in Cowessness First Nation Territory.
“It has been simply horrific and gut-wrenching to continue receiving this news,” said Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith. “We are lowering the flags at the Town of Bracebridge to acknowledge these precious lives lost and the historic mistreatment and violence perpetrated against Indigenous youth in the Residential School system in Canada.”
The flags will remain lowered until further clarification is provided in regards to the number of people whose remains have been found, with one hour for each person that fell victim to this unthinkable time in Canadian history.
