Charges may be pending after a Pride Flag was taken down at Huntsville Public School and burned.
OPP tell Country 102 they first became aware of the incident this past Thursday.
OPP Provincial Constable Kate McKay says the detachment is investigating the situation as a potential hate crime.
“All youths involved have been identified and the investigation is still in its very early stages,” she said.
The act was captured on video and circulated on social media recently.
McKay says two students involved belong to Huntsville Public School while other students were either from out of town or other schools in Huntsville. Six students in total were involved in the incident.
OPP hasn’t arrested anyone yet but more details are expected in the coming days.
“We are shocked at what occurred and are investigating this fully along with the Muskoka Crime Unit,” said McKay. “We take investigations like this very seriously and don’t tolerate any occurrence like this whatsoever.”
Non-violent hate crimes can result in up to two-year prison sentences in Canada.
More details as they become available.
