The Town of Collingwood is pushing forward with its mission to end hate speech and symbols.
At the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ annual conference yesterday, it passed the town’s resolution to petition the Canadian Government to engage in the development of legislation that would clarify and strengthen the definition of hate speech.
It would include: explicit recognition of the psychological harm that can be caused by hateful symbols and work with all levels of government in addressing the root causes of hate speech.
FCM Director and Collingwood Councillor, Kathy Jeffery, says the next steps include the resolution being forwarded to the appropriate Federal Minister(s).
