Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire “,….. proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.
Pete’s Auto Body; because we care about our community….
The Owen Sound Attack are saluting their graduating players this week and in the preparation process they wondered if Barret Kirwin is the only Ontario Hockey League player to score a hat trick AGAINST Owen Sound & also score a hat trick FOR Owen Sound.
Off the top of my head, I didn’t think so….. Jim Brown, Rod Hinks, Daniel Sisca & Joseph Blandisi were all guys I thought MIGHT have been candidates.
So we went back through the archives, & we checked the head to head matchups for every team against the Platers and the Attack and it turns out Barret Kirwin IS in fact the only player to post a hat trick both for and against Owen Sound.
When Kirwin was with Guelph, he had a hat trick for the Storm including the game tying goal late on December 2nd, 2017 in a 6-5 shootout win.
Once traded to Owen Sound, Kirwin had hat tricks for the Attack in games at North Bay and at home against Erie.
Our search found 4 cases where former Owen Sounders had hat tricks against Owen Sound and one case where a future Owen Sound player posted a hat trick.
Greg Clancy ( Kingston ), Jay Doyle ( London ), Blandisi ( Barrie ) & Alan Lyszczarczyk ( Mississauga ) all had 3 goal games against Owen Sound after playing previously for the Platers or the Attack.
Plus, John Osborne had a 4 goal game for Sault Ste Marie, including the overtime winner, before he was dealt to the Attack.
What I also found interesting about the 5 former-future Owen Sounders who turned the hat trick is that they all played for 3 or more teams.
Barret Kirwin played for 2 O.H.L. teams and holds the distinction of being the ONLY player to score 3 times in a game against Owen Sound and also for Owen Sound in a game staged in Owen Sound.
For Pete’s Auto Body, I’m Fred Wallace.
