For the second year in a row, tours to Chantry Island are cancelled.
In a prepared news release, Chair of the Marine Heritage Society Eric Tolton says until more people are vaccinated against Covid-19, the Board of Directors has decided for the safety of tourists and volunteer staff alike, the tours to the island are cancelled for 2021.
Tolton says it’s been tough since they have some fixed costs no matter what but on the upside it’s given volunteers two years to get much needed maintenance and restoration work done on the island.
He says there’s been some damage to the grounds but the lighthouse has held up well in the winter.
Tolton says “The water level is down 15-inches this year but unfortunately (during the high water level peak it) weakened the root system of a number of trees.
The tours will resume in 2022 which will be the 20th season of taking guests to Chantry Island.
Each tour includes the boat ride to and from the island; a tour of the fully restored and refurnished Keeper’s Cottage; the rebuilt boat house and the climb of the 107 steps to the lantern room atop the 162-year-old tower.
