Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton will take to Facebook Live tonight to inform constituents of his efforts to keep the SS Keewatin in Port McNichol.
The passenger liner once sailed between Port Arthur/Fort William on Lake Superior and Port McNicoll on Georgian Bay carrying passengers for the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Great Lakes steamship service.
In an update posted to Twitter, Stanton says the boat could be moved from its homeport, something he doesn’t want to see happen.
“As you may have heard, this magnificent passenger ship that operated from Port McNichol for 50 years and was brought home to Port in 2012 might be leaving us for a museum in Kingston,” says Stanton. “There’s nothing like Keewatin anywhere in the world. I’m working with the community to find a way to keep her here in Port McNichol. It’s a fantastic and fascinating story
As Stanton mentioned, the vessel may be donated as a Canadian cultural property to a museum which would require a nod from the Minister of Heritage.
Area historian Dan Travers and Friends of Keewatin Curator Fred Addis will join Stanton for the online Town Hall tonight.
The Facebook Live event will happen at 7 pm tonight (March 29th) here
