The Major Series Lacrosse Entry Draft is tonight, and from an historical standpoint, it will mark the first time Owen Sound will participate.
The newly located Owen Sound club, and hopefully for the last time I’ll say the former Brampton Excelsiors, will pick 9th overall, which is the third selection in Round 2.
Owen Sound does not have a first round pick this year.
However, in advance of tonight’s draft, Owen Sound swung a deal with the Peterborough Lakers who technically are the 3 time defending Mann Cup Champions.
In the deal Owen Sound sent their 2nd round selection in the 2023 draft to Peterborough.
In exchange, Owen Sound receives two 3rd round picks for the draft tonight.
Through the transaction, Owen Sound gets pick # 14 this evening, which Peterborough had acquired previously from Cobourg, along Peterborough’s own 3rd round selection, which is the 18th overall pick.
Owen Sound General Manager Steve McCarthy says the addition of the draft picks will give the club some flexibility.
McCarthy relates the extra selection might allow Owen Sound to address specific needs on the current roster or the additional picks might be utilized to target a local player.
