The Town of Collingwood wants a clearer definition on hate speech from the federal government.
It’s proposed resolution regarding pressing the federal government for legislation to define and clarify hate speech was considered last week, during a virtual bi-annual meeting of The Board of Directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). While FCM Board meeting deliberations are confidential, the following statement was issued as follow up to Collingwood’s proposal:
“FCM National Director Kathy Jeffery confirmed that by vote at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board meeting today (March 12th/21), the National Board of Directors has agreed to send Collingwood’s resolution to the FCM AGM and Annual Conference for consideration by the full membership in June/21.
The Town of Collingwood is asking FCM to urge the Federal Government to engage in the development of legislation that would clarify and strengthen the definition of hate speech, including explicit recognition of the psychological harm that can be caused by hateful symbols, and work with all orders of government in addressing the root causes of hate speech.
FCM is the national voice of local governments, with more than 2,000 members representing more than 90 per cent of Canadians.”
