Hi, this is Fred Wallace with ” Off the Wire ” proudly sponsored by Pete’s Auto Body.

One of my earliest memories of the Ontario Hockey League and it’s beginnings in Owen Sound was a News Conference in May of 1989.
It was rumoured the Guelph Platers were moving to Owen Sound and the Platers had called a media gathering whereby it was speculated they would make the formal announcement.
So on a Friday morning, I bolted down Highway 6, anxious & excited, to hear the formal and official announcement in a packed room adjacent to the Memorial Gardens in Guelph.
Platers General Manager Rob Holody came out, told the assembled onlookers he’d been directed by his legal advisors to say nothing pertaining to the Platers and ended the conference by announcing his 2 year old daughter had taken her first steps.
A four hour round trip for 23 seconds of audio……
Decades later, again somewhat anxious and excited, I thought the OHL General Managers Conference Call last week would produce clarity and direction for a pending abbreviated season in 4 hub centres.
Like the Platers in May of 1989, the OHL ( and the Attack ) had nothing to say, not because there might be legal ramifications, but rather because there simply was nothing to say
In 1989 the Platers eventually arrived in Owen Sound.
And eventually, the Ontario Hockey League will return. They’re just not certain when as of last week.
For Pete’s Auto Body I’m Fred Wallace.
