The Women’s Centre Grey Bruce is hosting a virtual event on Monday in celebration of International Women’s Day.
A release says on March 8th, the event will feature Keynote Speaker, Ashleigh Weeden who will discuss the effects that the pandemic has had on rural women.
The online event, which is set to take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., will also feature yoga and networking opportunities.
Executive Director, Heather Sheldrick will give an overview of The Women’s Centre’s programs, and event guests will be able to bid on auction items from local supporters.
Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements and rally for women’s equality.
The Grey Bruce Labour Council is also taking part in the event. The organization says in a release, Labour Council delegate, Karen Gventer, will be hosting the “Women in the Workforce – Gender Wage Gap” breakout room.
The labour council says it is pleased to sponsor up to five women to attend this event.
Anna Morrison, Labour Council Sergeant at Arms, says International Women’s Day is a day of celebration, but also a time to rededicate to ensuring violence against women and children is eradicated.
Labour Council Secretary, Amy Stephen adds, “For decades labour has played a significant role, but perhaps none more so than the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) Women’s Committee. The committee was formed in 1976. Members of the committee organized and mobilized demonstrations, strike support, civil disobedience, marches, and lobbies to name but a few activities. Amongst many issues we find, maternity leave, ending racist immigration policies, equal pay for work of equal value, family law reform, childcare, full access to abortion and midwifery, an end to violence against women, LGBTQ rights, and union recognition.”
Registration for the Women’s Day event is $20 at www.thewomenscentre.org/IWD
The Women’s Centre Grey Bruce provides emergency shelter, compassionate counselling, 24/7 crisis support, safety planning, family court support and transitional housing to women and their children who are experiencing abuse and violence in Grey and Bruce.
