While the Scotties Tournament of Hearts continues in Calgary, there was major news at Saugeen Shores Council on Monday night.
The Port Elgin Curling Club received council approval and will host the 2022 Ontario Tankard at The Plex in Port Elgin February 6th to 13th next year.
The history of major curling events in Port Elgin is lengthy, highlighted by decades of successful Superspiel competitions.
And while hosting the Ontario Men’s Championship next year is a major step up the curling ladder, it may not be the last step taken
Steering Committee Chair Doug Flowers is confident the Tankard will be a massive success and in such a case, it could also lead to more major events be conducted at the Plex; conceivably Grand Slam of Curling stops, the Canadian Juniors and maybe even the World Juniors.
The organizing committee has the benefit of utilizing The Plex as the host venue which offers flexible space for hosting and comfortable seating.
The estimation is that the Tankard will attract 1,000 people per day over an 8 day period, which in turn will create a terrific economic boost to the community and to the region, maybe in the neighbourhood of a million dollars in what is general a quiet portion of the year along the Lake Huron Shoreline.
The official Tankard launch will be held at the Port Elgin Curling Club on Saturday which, along with the council approval from Saugeen Shores, means the level of planning and anticipation is well underway for the 2022 Tankard at The Plex in Port Elgin.
