The City of Owen Sound is hoping to encourage people to get outside and have some winter fun this month with an initiative called SNOWen Sound Frolics.
The City says it aims to provide safe, outdoor and essential recreational opportunities to support physical and mental health.
Until February 28th, ten outdoor landmarks in the city will be chosen and posted on the City’s tourism social media.
For weekly clues on new locations, visit Owen Sound Tourism Events and Attractions on Facebook or @cityowensound on Instagram or @OSTourism on Twitter.
People are encouraged to use the clues to pinpoint the location, then snap a photo with the SNOWen Sound Frolics Sign and share their photos to social media with the hashtag #SNOWenSound.
The City reminds you to maintain physical distancing if you are not with members of your household.
Those who share photos from all ten of the #SNOWenSound locations will be entered for a chance to win one of two SNOWen Sound Frolics #hyperlocal Grand Prizes.
The prizes are valued at $500.00 each. The winners will be announced after the 4-week campaign.
There are additional weekly giveaways for those who like, comment and share their photos throughout the campaign. Bonus giveaways will be announced on Family Day weekend (February 15th).
The City notes, the experience has been designed in consultation with the Grey Bruce Health Unit to create a safe, physically distanced activity that allows residents to explore some of Owen Sound’s natural and built amenities.
Mayor Ian Boddy says, “While we need to stay home, stay safe and save lives, exercising in fresh air is important to our physical and mental well-being. SNOWen Sound Frolics is a fun way for residents to safely experience many of the wonderful things that Owen Sound has to offer. I encourage residents to follow the provincial guidelines, wear your mask, watch your distance and participate safely.”
The Province’s current guidelines say up to five people may gather outdoors, keeping a minimum distance of 2 metres from each other. Face coverings are encouraged. Visit https://covid-19.ontario.ca/zones-and-restrictions for further details.
The City says there are 1.4 million square metres of outdoor recreation space in the City of Owen Sound, and 160 km of maintained trails throughout the city.
