The Ontario Lacrosse Association through their Invitational Tournament Committee announced last week that traditional minor box lacrosse tournaments will not take place this season.
The decision was based on the current environment of COVID-19 cases in Ontario and was reached in conjunction with public health restrictions and the OLA’s policy of Return to Action and Return to Play.
The underlying view was that taking all factors into consideration conducting lacrosse tournaments as done for decades in a typical season was not realistically possible.
The OLA remains hopeful for Spring, Summer and Fall play, and the tournament committee is preparing options that could be implemented once the existing conditions improve.
There was a lot more in the O.L.A. statement, which is posted on our web page, but reading between the lines it seems pretty apparent the annual Owen Sound Father’s Day Weekend Classic will not be operated again this June.
Naturally, this will be a disappointment on a variety of levels for Minor Lacrosse.
And while they may not have taken immediate notice of the O.L.A. announcement, you have to wonder what the take would be from the city of Owen Sound and the various users of the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre; Minor Hockey, the Attack, Minor Lacrosse, the Junior NorthStars, the Bug Juice Senior NorthStars and if they ever get here, the new Major Lacrosse operation.
At present the Bayshore is a field hospital, and I think thankfully, one that hasn’t needed to be utilized
But it’s there, just in case.
The question is; for how long ?
Furthermore, the suggestion has been floated based on the alteration of the Bayshore and it’s large size, would it not serve as some kind of Vaccination Centre going forward ?
Again the question is; for how long ?
