Ontario has its first positive case of the South African variant (B 1-351) of COVID-19.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David Williams, announced today that it has been detected in a person in Peel Region, but added the case had no recent travel history and had no contact with anyone who did travel.
He said, “This is our first South African one. I would doubt if it’s going to be our last.”
The Mississauga man who is infected is reportedly recovering at home.
A small number of cases of the variant have already been confirmed in other Canadian provinces, including Alberta and British Columbia.
