Owen Sound is looking for nominations for its annual Senior, Volunteer and Youth Volunteer of the Year.
A release from the City says, for almost 45 years, the has been recognizing volunteers from community groups and organizations who have had a substantial positive influence on the quality of life in the city.
The City is now asking for nominations 2021’s awards..
You can find nomination forms on the City’s website at www.owensound.ca/volunteer. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 26, 2021.
The selection committee is made up of the Community Services Committee which evaluates applications. Winners are confirmed by Council and presented their award at a Council meeting.
Mayor Ian Boddy says in a statement, “The Owen Sound community is full of incredible people who give their time and energy while expecting nothing in return. We’re grateful for their efforts and look forward to acknowledging the winners each year.”
The Youth Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year are awarded annually in April. The Senior of the Year is awarded annually in June to coincide with Seniors month.
2020’s recipients were awarded in December. They were Liz Zetlin (Volunteer of Year), Fred Geberdt (Senior of Year) and Lauren Radbourne (Youth Volunteer of Year).
Zetlin is an advocate for environmental issues including climate change, water and wastewater. She was also instrumental in establishing Owen Sound’s poet laureate program.
Fred Geberdt, who passed away in late 2020 was Senior of the Year. He volunteered with the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Assocation for over 30 years and was an integral contributor to the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, taking on countless roles from advertising, public relations, sponsor day festivities and chairing meetings.
Youth Volunteer of the Year Lauren Radbourne Youth Volunteer of the Year was nominated on behalf of Owen Sound Minor Lacrosse. She is a player, referee, coach, training clinic leader and executive member.
