The Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit has confirmed it is the U-K variant of the COVID-19 virus, that has devastated Barrie’s Roberta Place long term care home.
Only three residents there have managed to avoid getting the virus. There have been 29 deaths and 124 residents and 84 staff are infected.
Two essential visitors and three other external partners have also tested positive.
The health unit and the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre have now vaccinated residents and staff at Roberta Place.
The confirmation of the UK variant comes the same day as the province-wide case count dropped again.
The latest number is 2359. But the death toll has climbed by 52.
The province has also marked a tragic milestone— the number of people who’ve died in this second wave, is now higher than the death toll from the first wave.
