If you’re feeling more depressed than usual these days, you’re not the only one.
Today is considered Blue Monday—the most depressing day of the year.
The concept was first published in a 2005 press release from a UK travel company, which claimed to have calculated the date using some sort of “equation”.
Even though experts say there is no credible evidence to suggest that one day in particular can increase the risk of people feeling depressed, there are certain things that may make people feel down at this time of year, such as post-Christmas financial strains, broken New Year’s resolutions, bad weather and short daylight hours.
Then, you add on the global pandemic and lockdowns.
The national CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association says one of the best things you can do for your mental health, is to get physically active.
But according to data collected by Participaction, Canadians are more likely to cope with the anxieties of life under lockdown through sedentary activities, such as increased screen time, rather than by getting active.
Research suggests that physical activity releases neurochemicals that can lift and improve a person’s mood.
