Grey Bruce OPP say there’s an app you can add to your smartphone that can help them rescue you.
It’s called the What3Words app and can pinpoint your location within 3 metres anywhere on the planet.
Police say it came in handy on Sunday evening (Jan 10) when they were called by a pair of lost hikers near McCurdy Drive in Lion’s Head. (McCurdy Drive links to a number of hiking trails including the Bruce Trail).
Police say the hikers had downloaded the mobile application What3Words and officers were able to locate the hikers a short time later. Police say there were no injuries.
OPP say What3Words helps people in need when a caller can’t describe or doesn’t know where they are located.
Through its global mapping system, the app labels every three squared metres with a unique three word location string that can be converted into latitude and longitude coordinates, making it easy for the police to locate people in distress.
The technology also helped OPP officers in Orillia locate and rescue an injured snowmobiler who was in a collision on Lake Couchiching.
