U.S. President Donald Trump has finally committed to “an orderly transition” of power today, after Congress confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s election win.
The statement came hours after a violent mob of Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol yesterday, forcing lawmakers into hiding, in a shocking attempt to overturn America’s presidential election.
Washington, D.C., Police Chief Robert Contee said the dead included a woman who was shot by the U.S. Capitol Police, as well as three others who died in “medical emergencies.”
The rioters were egged on by Trump, who eventually told them to go home, while still maintaining the election results were false.

Washington’s mayor instituted an evening curfew in an attempt to contain the violence, which ended at 6 this morning.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement, saying “Canadians are deeply disturbed and saddened by the attack on democracy in the United States, our closest ally and neighbour. Violence will never succeed in overruling the will of the people. Democracy in the US must be upheld – and it will be.”
Biden is due to be sworn in on January 20th.

Today is a reminder, a painful one, that democracy is fragile. To preserve it requires people of good will, leaders with the courage to stand up, who are devoted not to pursuit of power and personal interest at any cost, but to the common good.
