Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says people travelling outside Canada for non-essential reasons won’t receive the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit.
The benefit allows workers to take paid sick leave if their employer doesn’t offer it.
In his first address of 2021, the Prime Minister said he shares people’s frustrations with politicians and others travelling outside Canada recently and said the government is correcting the situation quickly.
“This program was created to give people sick leave if they needed it and otherwise wouldn’t have one from their employer,” he said. “It’s not there to pay for someone’s post-vacation quarantine.”
Starting Thursday travellers who went outside the country will need a negative Covid-19 test before returning on a flight to Canada. Once they return they must undertake a 14-day mandatory quarantine.
