With all the snow that’s fallen in Bruce and Grey counties in recent days, snowmobilers may be getting the itch to ride.
But, they’ll still have to hold off the throttle a bit longer.
Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs District 9 Manager Karen Buratynski says volunteers have been busy since Boxing Day inspecting trails, but a few days of freezing temperatures are still necessary to create the base required to start opening them.
“I just want to caution everybody, that when the snow falls it doesn’t mean the trails open automatically,” Buratynski says. “They actually do have to be built.”
Buratynski says groomers that have started working some trails in the area are finding there is a lot of water under the snow, because the ground was not frozen before the squalls hit on Christmas.
“At this point, we just have to hope Mother Nature sends us some cold temperatures so we can open some trails for some riding in the next few days,” Buratynski says.
Buratynski advises snowmobilers to refer to the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide for updates on the status of trails. As of Tuesday morning, all OFSC trails in Grey Bruce were closed.
OFSC District 9 encompasses all of the snowmobile clubs in Bruce and Grey counties, as well as and the northern parts of Perth, Huron and Wellington.
