Work set to be done on Lakeshore Boulevard in Sauble Beach to create more space for parking.
Mayor Janice Jackson says the parking on the shoulder of the road is being expanded because over the years the sand has encroached on the road, “Now people are parking, especially those with large vehicles…their back ends are right out on Lakeshore Boulevard and kids jump out of their vehicles and then run around the back to unload all their toys and it’s very, very dangerous,” says Jackson.
She notes, “We’ve wanted to do this for quite a long time.” A staff report to council November 17th notes the dunes have overtaken two sets of parking bollards that have been placed there over the last 30 years.
She says the work from Main Street to Kinloss Lane involves cutting into the dunes at the roadside and installing large decorative concrete blocks to form a retaining wall and then contouring the dune up from the wall.
A staff report to council says the work is approved in principle by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority has been consulted.
Jackson says it’s roughly a two-week, $150,000 project that will likely be completed in mid-December.
