Grey Highlands Council has voted against reducing speed limits in hamlets in the municipality.
A recent survey, which was presented to council November 4th, showed there was less appetite for it among residents than one might guess.
Of 339 respondents, 230 of them live in a hamlet.
57 per cent of respondents didn’t want the limit reduced from 50 to 40 km/h in hamlets.
60 per cent of respondents wanted more speed limit enforcement. Many expressed worry about pedestrian safety and numerous respondents said a 10km/h difference won’t matter to someone who is distracted or choosing to speed anyway.
While councillors discussed the use potential use of things like traffic trailers that record and display drivers’ speeds, they did not vote on a particular action to improve speed limit enforcement.
