Work is underway on a new sidewalk and curb intended to enhance student safety at Keppel-Sarawak School.
According to a city release, the project is being implemented to provide a safe path of travel for students and pedestrians on 8th Avenue West. The existing Keppel-Sarawak School sidewalk will be connected to the 27th Street West intersection.
An additional pedestrian cross over will also be installed to the Tom Williams parking lot.
City council awarded a $72,000 contract to LPS General Construction for the work at its Sept. 28 meeting. It was the lowest of five compliant bids.
The project is being jointly funded with the Township of Georgian Bluffs.
According to an Owen Sound staff report, the Keppel Sarawak School Community Council requested in 2018 that the city and township work together to support student safety by creating a safe walking and pick up zone around the school area.
The installation of a sidewalk on the west side of 8th Avenue West was one of the asks.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of December.
