As we get closer to Halloween, the Town of Wasaga Beach is reminding residents to follow the advice of health experts when it comes to participating in the annual night of ghosts, goblins, and all things spooky.
“COVID-19 means this is not a normal Halloween. If you do choose to participate, please keep public health guidelines in mind so that everyone has a safe experience,” Mayor Nina Bifolchi said.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit suggests families limit activities to their own household if they wish to exercise extreme caution this Halloween. For those families planning to trick-or-treat and hand out candy, the health unit recommends the following steps:
- Avoid gatherings with people outside your household.
- Stay home if feeling ill, even if you have mild symptoms, or if you are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19.
- Only go out with members of your direct household.
- Only trick-or-treat outside.
- Both trick-or-treaters and people handing out candy should wear a face covering. A costume mask is not a suitable substitute for a face covering and should not be worn over a face covering as it may make it difficult to breathe.
- Consider building your face covering into your costume.
- Do not congregate or linger at doorsteps. Line up two metres (six feet) apart if waiting.
- Avoid high-touch surfaces and objects.
- Whether collecting or handing out treats, wash your hands often and thoroughly or use hand sanitizer.
- Do not leave treats in a bucket or bowl for children to grab.
- Consider using tongs or other similar tools to hand out treats.
Remember the town’s Pumpkin Trail takes place Nov. 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Oakview Woods, 1724 Mosley St. The Pumpkin Trail will run through Oakview Woods and feature lit carved pumpkins. Visitors to the trail can wear their Halloween costume.
