A 21 year old Owen Sound man faces criminal charges and Highway Traffic Act charges after a crash in Owen Sound.
Owen Sound police say just after 11 Sunday night (Sept 27) an officer patrolling in the area of the 100 block of 8th Street East saw a 1997 Honda Civic drive over the curb while turning onto 1st Avenue East by the farmer’s market, then it sped off.
Police say out of concern about the driver’s sobriety, the officer followed the Civic and tried to pull it over by the entrance to Harrison Park.
When the officer switched on his emergency lights, the driver sped off up the hill on 2nd Avenue East at what they say was a very high speed.
Out of concern for public safety, the officer stopped trying to pull them over.
Soon after, police discovered the driver had lost control of his vehicle by Greenwood Cemetery and crashed, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
Police say the 21 year old driver and his 17 year old passenger walked away from the vehicle with only minor injuries.
Police say they could find no reasonable explanation as to why the driver didn’t stop for the officer.
They say his actions put not only his and his passenger’s lives at risk, but the general public as well.
Police have not listed the exact charges against the young man, but say he has a court date in Owen Sound October 5th.
