Goderich Mayor John Grace
The Mayor of Goderich says he would follow the advice of health authorities on rules around public gatherings, were the town to move ahead on limiting crowds.
Premier Doug Ford told reporters he would allow municipalities to create their own limits on group gatherings, outside the provincial limits of 50 people indoors, and 100 outdoors.
That announcement preceded a provincial mandate to lower group gatherings to 10 indoors, and 25 outdoors.
Ford’s comments came in early September, just as the province observed a resurgence in COVID-19 numbers.
When asked his thoughts on imposing group gathering limits specific to Goderich, Mayor John Grace says health officials would first need to be consulted.
While Grace says his first priority will always be public health, he tells Country 104.9 News the town will only create health mandates under the direction of the Medical Officer of Health for Huron-Perth. Dr. Miriam Klassen.
“We will always lean toward the advice of the Medical Officer of Health,” says Grace.
He tells us now is the time to maintain current health standards by wearing face coverings, practicing proper hand washing, and maintaining social distance, to curb the spread of COVID-19.
