The Province is moving to freeze rent increases in 2021 for most rent-controlled and non-rent-controlled residential units.
Today Premier Doug Ford announced the Helping Tenants and Small Businesses Act, that would, if passed, provide the vast majority of Ontario’s tenants with financial relief.
“And the last thing I want any family to worry about right now is whether or not they can afford to stay in their home,” said Ford. “As Premier, I want to make sure we do everything in our power to ensure people can make rent and stay in their homes.”
This means the majority of the 1.7 million renters in Ontario won’t see their rent increase between January 1st and December 31st of next year.
In addition, the new legislation would extend the temporary ban on commercial evictions beyond September 1st 2020 as far as October 30th 2020 to provide more certainty to small businesses impacted by Covid-19.
